### Overview

The Pet Companion Home is located in Portugal and designed specifically to enhance the mental and emotional well-being of elderly residents through the inclusion of pets within a nursing home environment. Acknowledging the increasing trend of pet ownership among older adults, the facility aims to create a supportive atmosphere where residents can coexist with their pets. This initiative aligns with evolving social dynamics and reflects a shift in regulations concerning pet inclusion in such facilities.

### Spatial Configuration and User Experience

The design prioritizes communal spaces that facilitate interaction between residents and their pets, ensuring that social engagement is central to daily life. Key features include a dedicated pet center, recreational zones, and lounging areas designed to encourage both community dynamics and individual comfort. Accommodation options consist of single occupancy rooms with private outdoor access and twin suites that promote both social interaction and personal privacy. The layout strategically integrates outdoor gardens and activity areas to support physical well-being and provide spaces for residents to engage with their pets.

### Material Selection and Sustainability

A thoughtful approach to material selection underscores both functionality and energy efficiency. Structural elements utilize concrete for durability and thermal mass, while glass facades enhance natural light intake and provide double insulation for improved thermal performance. Wood is incorporated in adjustable sun shading systems to regulate temperature and add warmth to interior spaces. The use of insulating materials throughout the building contributes to an energy-efficient and sustainable environment, aligning with modern standards of eco-conscious design.

The facility serves as a model for integrating the positive aspects of pet companionship into elder care, addressing emotional and physical needs while fostering a strong sense of community and interaction with the environment.
