Charred Timber Cladding Interprets Fissures in a Movie Pavilion Setting

Project in-detail

Utilizing charred timber cladding that mimics Iceland's geological fissures, the pavilion offers an immersive cinematic experience while harmonizing with the surrounding landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes charred wooden shingles to enhance weather resistance while providing a textured aesthetic.
02
Incorporates cross-laminated timber panels for structural integrity and sustainability.
03
Features a distinct bent A-frame design that echoes the local geological formations.
04
Central courtyard facilitates natural light and fosters community interaction.
05
Acoustic timber slats in the cinema optimize sound quality for an immersive viewing experience.
The architecture of the "Descent" project is situated in the rugged landscape of Iceland, designed as a movie pavilion that integrates with its natural surroundings. This structure reflects the country’s geological features, particularly its fissures and caves, offering a space that not only serves as a venue for film but also enhances the aesthetic and experiential qualities of the environment. The project utilizes a careful balance of massing, materiality, and spatial organization to create an engaging experience for visitors.

Unique Architectural Features and Design Approach

The pavilion is defined by its fractured volumetric configuration, which mimics the characteristics of the Icelandic terrain. The architectural approach emphasizes a dialogue between the building and its natural context, encouraging visitors to explore both within and outside the structure. The central courtyard acts as a focal point, allowing for multiple pathways that lead to various functional spaces, including a cinema, gallery, and café. This allows for fluid movement through the space, fostering interaction among visitors while providing a unique navigational experience.

Sustainability is a core design principle, with materials selected for both performance and ecological impact. The use of charred timber and Viroc panels establishes a visual connection to the landscape while simultaneously ensuring durability against harsh weather conditions. The design also incorporates natural lighting strategies through skylights, which enhance interior spaces and reduce the need for artificial light, thereby improving energy efficiency. Additionally, provisions for renewable energy sources offer an opportunity for the pavilion to engage with sustainable practices long-term.

Incorporation of Functional Elements

The functionality of "Descent" is rooted in its diverse programmatic offerings. Visitors enter through a spacious courtyard that serves as a communal gathering area, seamlessly transitioning into independent zones designed for specific activities. The cinema is intentionally crafted to provide an intimate viewing experience, utilizing acoustic timber slats to enhance sound quality. The café, positioned strategically next to the cinema, encourages social interaction before and after screenings, contributing to the project's role as a community hub.

The gallery space is designed to display visual art while promoting movement throughout the pavilion. This interconnection of spaces illustrates a comprehensive design philosophy that prioritizes user experience alongside functionality. Moreover, the architectural plans detail how these spaces work harmoniously, allowing for a cohesive flow within the overall design.
