Troll’s Tongue
Observation
Platform

Buildner is thrilled to announce the launch of the Troll’s Tongue Observation Platform competition, an international architecture ideas challenge set against the breathtaking backdrop of Trolltunga, one of Norway’s most iconic cliffs. This competition calls on architects, designers, and visionaries worldwide to create a viewing platform that enhances the visitor experience while respecting the natural beauty and environmental sensitivity of Trolltunga.

Trolltunga, or “The Troll’s Tongue,” is a stunning cliff formation located in Norway’s Hardanger region, projecting horizontally over Lake Ringedalsvatnet at an elevation of approximately 700 meters. This natural platform offers unmatched panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and mountains, drawing thousands of visitors annually.

Participants are tasked with designing a 3x6 meter platform, positioned on a flat area of the cliff, which will provide visitors with a safe and thrilling way to appreciate the dramatic views over Lake Ringedalsvatnet, 700 meters below. The recommended platform size allows flexibility for creative solutions that integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape, using sustainable materials and innovative design.

Rugged rock formations, alpine vegetation, and untouched wilderness mark the landscape around Trolltunga. The area experiences varied weather, with exposure to sunlight, mist, wind, and snow, underscoring the need for durable and sustainable design. The site’s remote and pristine nature provides an ideal setting for a viewing platform that respects and complements its extraordinary natural beauty.

Open to all, the Troll’s Tongue Observation Platform competition invites entrants to showcase their creativity in crafting a design that celebrates Norway’s rugged beauty while ensuring environmental harmony.
