Modular Home
Design Challenge

A house isn’t always a home and a home isn’t always a house. The concept of a home is both universal and distinctly unique to each individual person and each culture from every part of the world. From big cities to small towns to tiny rural villages, each culture is influenced by its own history, politics, economy, and resources in how they define a home. That being said, there are a few common traits of an ideal home that we can all aspire to.

The concept of a home is both universal and distinctly unique to each individual person and each culture from every part of the world.

The Modular Home Design Challenge 2021 is the first in a series of annual competitions focusing on the concept of modular architecture. As one of the most versatile forms of design, modular architecture offers creative, efficient, and sustainable solutions when designing homes and living spaces. Operating either as a building block that is part of an integrated system, or as a stand-alone entity, modular construction breaks from traditional built projects and allows novel designs to be realised.

For this competition, participants are tasked with designing a modular home that can be constructed in any form or layout. The modular home can be set in a location of their choice, either rural, urban, or suburban. The jury will be looking for design concepts that show a critical analysis of what a home is and could be in an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world.

This is the first competition in an annual competition series and is being launched in combination with an essay competition on the same topic. As winning entries will be featured in the next edition of ARCHHIVE BOOKS’ ‘Modular Architecture’ publication, those designs that are the most innovative and inspiring will be favoured.
