Vila Caiada is a guesthouse in the Freguesia de Barreira, located in Portugal’s Leiria municipality. It is surrounded by lush olive tree farms and vineyards. The design reflects a careful balance between traditional Portuguese elements and modern needs. It serves as a peaceful retreat, offering guests stunning views of the countryside while connecting with the rural environment.

Architecture and Design

The design draws inspiration from traditional Portuguese homes, featuring whitewashed walls and local stone foundations. The building displays clean lines and modern touches that align with the natural slope of the site. This approach helps the structure fit well within its surroundings, allowing it to become part of the landscape without drawing too much attention to itself.

Spatial Organization

The layout consists of separate volumes that serve specific purposes. Four en-suite bedrooms and a meditation space offer privacy while remaining accessible from the exterior. A dining and tasting room encourages interaction with local culinary traditions. In addition, a combined living room and small library provide comfortable spaces for relaxation and leisure. This organization enhances the retreat experience for guests.

Natural Light and Environmental Considerations

Natural light is a key feature in the design, with large windows on the north façade that bring daylight into the basement, where local products such as wine and cheese are stored. Bedrooms have windows oriented to the west, allowing warm light to fill the spaces. This focus on daylight reduces the need for artificial lighting and creates a strong connection between indoors and the outdoor landscape.

Structural Elements

Concrete columns and walls are used in construction, providing stability while maintaining a visual link to traditional building practices in the region. These materials are chosen for their durability and complement the overall design. The careful use of materials reinforces the connection to the surrounding environment and supports a harmonious aesthetic throughout the guesthouse.

Vila Caiada represents a thoughtful response to its landscape. It invites the natural beauty of the area inside through large windows that frame views of the olive orchards. The design offers a peaceful retreat, allowing guests to appreciate both the simple comforts of the space and the rich surroundings in which it sits.
