Movable Panels Create Dynamic Spaces with Wooden and Aluminum Elements

Project in-detail

Movable panels create versatile interiors that blur boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, combining wooden and aluminum elements to support a dynamic living environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Movable panels allow fluid transitions between multifunctional spaces.
02
The design emphasizes strong indoor-outdoor connections through landscape integration.
03
Wooden and aluminum materials support an affordable yet aesthetically appealing structure.
04
Flexible layouts adapt to the diverse needs of daily living activities.
05
Natural light is maximized to enhance the overall atmosphere and functionality.

The architectural design explores a modern approach to multifunctional living spaces, bringing together various activities within one environment. Located in an urban area, the design concept focuses on the idea of a "stage," where individuals can easily shift between different roles such as working, relaxing, cooking, and socializing. This setup encourages adaptability, creating a living experience that meets the needs of contemporary life.

Spatial Organization

The layout emphasizes mobility and flexibility. Movable panels provide access to different rooms and facilitate smooth transitions between various functions. This approach challenges traditional residential designs, which typically enforce strict boundaries. By allowing residents to modify their space according to their needs, the design promotes a more varied and dynamic living experience.

Connection to Nature

An important feature of the design is its connection with the natural environment. It highlights the integration of outdoor elements, helping to bridge the gap between indoor living and the surrounding landscape. Gardens, trees, and natural light become integral parts of the experience, enhancing the atmosphere and fostering a sense of calm within the city.

Materiality

Material choices have been made to balance affordability with visual appeal. The design uses wooden panels, aluminum sheets, and glass. These materials are selected for their ability to create a warm and inviting atmosphere while also supporting the flexible layout. The lightweight nature of these materials allows for easy movement and rearrangement, aligning with the intention of the design.

Inhabitants’ Experience

The design eliminates conventional boundaries between day and night, as well as inside and outside. This encourages deeper interaction between residents and their environment. The layout invites individuals to explore their space freely, shaping their experience based on their preferences and the time of day. With the clever use of sliding panels and open spaces, the design encourages a home that responds to the changing needs of its inhabitants, blending the built environment with the beauty of nature.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
