The VIREAL project explores the relationship between virtual spaces and real environments through a thoughtfully designed residence. Set within the context of the metaverse, it allows individuals to experience both stunning natural landscapes and immersive digital landscapes. The design focuses on fluidity and adaptability, encouraging interaction within the home.

INTERIOR CONCEPT

The interior design employs the unique idea of multiple gravities, enabling users to navigate in a world where physics can vary. Features such as floating objects and levitating elements challenge traditional concepts of space. The use of shifting slabs adds a sense of movement throughout the interior, inviting occupants to engage actively with their surroundings.

LIGHTING AND ATMOSPHERE

Lighting plays a key role in the overall experience of the VIREAL home. Dynamic elements, such as floating bubbles, provide illumination that changes based on user movement. This approach not only enhances visibility but also enriches the atmosphere of the space. Interactive lighting underscores the project’s emphasis on creating a mixed environment that feels both welcoming and responsive.

FUNCTIONAL SPACES

Functional areas are carefully planned to accommodate various activities. The lounge serves as a central gathering spot, featuring comfortable seating and a bar for informal conversations. An exhibition space allows for the display of NFTs and digital art, reflecting the fusion of digital culture with the residential experience. The minimalist design complements extensive views of the outdoors, ensuring that nature remains an integral part of the living environment.

WORKSPACE DESIGN

Access to the workspace is achieved through a hidden door within a wall, promoting easy transitions between different areas of the home. The modular office can fit up to twelve individuals and uses adaptable furniture that appears as users log in. This functionality speaks to modern demands for flexible workspaces, blending professional needs with home life.

VIREAL serves as an exploration of how digital interaction can coexist with physical presence. It balances the essence of nature and technology, allowing users to observe and reflect in outdoor areas. This thoughtful integration of design encourages a multifaceted experience within the home that resonates with contemporary living.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
