The Liveable Pontoon is an architectural design situated at the intersection of wetland and marine environments. This project exemplifies a contemporary approach to residential architecture by integrating built environments with their natural surroundings. Its elevated structure is designed to accommodate the shifting nature of its aquatic context, successfully addressing concerns such as flooding while providing functional living spaces.

The architectural design consists of three distinct overlapping volumes, which are allocated for different functions: resting, eating, and washing. This spatial arrangement allows for a fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering a connection with nature. The elevated position of the building not only enhances views of the marshlands and river but also safeguards it against rising water levels.

Sustainable design is a core focus of the Liveable Pontoon. It employs local timber sourced from nearby forests, contributing to its ecological integrity. The flooring utilizes terracotta made from materials sourced from the surrounding marshland, which aids in temperature regulation within the living spaces. The exterior is clad in corrugated metal, providing both durability and an aesthetic quality that complements the coastal environment.

Innovative water management systems are integral to the design's sustainability. A rainwater harvesting system collects precipitation from the rooftop, funneling it into a storage tank for domestic use. Additionally, the inclusion of a propeller powered by ocean currents allows for energy generation, providing electricity for lighting and essential systems. The project’s design differentiates itself through its seamless integration of architecture with ecology. Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
