Masquerade is an installation located in the urban environment of Berlin, designed to examine the relationship between techno culture and the city's historical context. The project includes nine distinct character booths that illustrate different clubbing experiences, providing a tangible expression of nightlife within Berlin's intricate social narratives. By blending the lively aspects of club culture with the complexities of the city's past, the design encourages discussions about the themes of escapism and community identity.

Conceptual Framework

The foundation of Masquerade revolves around the contrast between remembering and forgetting, particularly in relation to the East and West neighborhoods of Berlin. The installation occupies five key historical sites: Tergarten and Potsdamer Platz, Museum Island and Alexander Platz, the East Side Gallery, Checkpoint Charlie, and Tempelhof. These locations not only highlight cultural memory but also stimulate conversations around the effects of gentrification on community experiences.

Design Elements

The character booths serve as modular units that fulfill both functional and social roles. Each booth is equipped with projectors and real-time tracking sensors, allowing for immersive audiovisual experiences. This technological integration facilitates engaging interactions while adhering to social distancing measures. Additionally, live DJ performances synchronize within the installations, enhancing the collective experience characteristic of Berlin's nightlife.

Sustainability and Adaptability

The design emphasizes adaptability, with booths lying dormant during the day. This quality reflects the temporary nature of nightlife. The flexibility of the booths allows for repositioning or repurposing, making them versatile tools for urban engagement. This approach supports sustainability and underscores how architecture can remain relevant in continually changing environments.

Visual Impact

Masquerade invites direct engagement with Berlin's cultural landscape. The character booths present a vibrant and interactive space, emphasizing the importance of sharing dance and expression in community settings. The installation articulates the rich stories embedded in urban life, creating distinct experiences that resonate with the complexities of Berlin’s identity.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
