Double-Skinned Structure With Steel Framing and Flexible PVC Membrane for Community Engagement

Project in-detail

A double-skinned structure employing steel framing and flexible PVC membranes enhances thermal efficiency while facilitating community interaction, creating a multifunctional museum dedicated to equine art.
5 key facts about this project
01
Double-skinned design enhances thermal and acoustic performance.
02
Steel framing supports expansive, open exhibition spaces.
03
Flexible PVC membranes offer weather resistance and adaptability.
04
The structure incorporates a central pavilion for community events.
05
Elevated slabs create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

This architectural design project presents a contemporary museum dedicated to equine art, modeled as the “Omuil museum of the horse.” The design emphasizes spatial versatility and community engagement. The structure is strategically conceived to serve various functions while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings.

The museum consists of two main levels featuring interconnected spaces that enhance visitor circulation. The first floor is organized with exhibition areas that allow for diverse display formats, encouraging interaction with the artworks. The second floor accommodates larger halls designed for significant exhibitions and multi-functional events, thus promoting a flexible approach to museum function.

Innovative Structural Solutions

A notable feature of this project is the incorporation of a double skin design. This elevates the building's slabs, creating a comfortable environment for visitors while improving thermal and acoustic performance. The exterior is framed with PTR (Profile Tube Rectangular) steel sections, which provide both structural support and aesthetic appeal. Complementing the steel framework, metal sheets are utilized for roofing and façade cladding, ensuring durability and maintenance efficiency.

The design also integrates elements such as folding doors and curtain systems, creating adaptable spaces that seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor environments. The careful placement of these elements allows for a dynamic interaction between exhibition spaces and the natural landscape. For visitors, this integration enhances the overall experience by making the museum feel open and inviting.

Spatial Layout and Material Choices

The layout of the museum prioritizes accessibility and community access. The central gathering area facilitates various activities, from exhibitions to community events, effectively transforming the museum into a civic hub. The use of rigid PVC flooring and the strategic arrangement of exhibition spaces contribute to the museum’s functionality, allowing for a high volume of foot traffic without compromising safety.

Materials selected for the project, such as PVC membranes for waterproofing and vertical poles for structural support, reflect an emphasis on sustainability and longevity. Each material is chosen not just for its practical characteristics but also for its ability to integrate harmoniously with the architectural design.

This project sets itself apart from typical museum developments through its flexible approach to space and its emphasis on creating a communal environment. The design effectively challenges conventional museum layouts by incorporating civic functions and adaptable designs. Visitors can interact with both the art and the architecture, making the experience truly unique.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
