The Reflestone project is located in Tokyo and serves as a space for quiet reflection and meditation. It addresses the stresses of urban life by creating a retreat that draws on elements of Zen Buddhism, particularly the enso symbol, which represents beauty in imperfection. The design concept embraces the principles of wabi-sabi, highlighting a simple and humble beauty that contrasts sharply with the city's often rigid and formal structures.

Architectural Form

The building features smooth, flowing curves that stand in contrast to the angular forms typically found in Tokyo's architecture. This choice enhances the sense of calm and tranquility the space aims to provide. Rather than competing with the surroundings, the Reflestone offers a gentle presence, inviting people to pause and reflect in a busy environment.

Transitional Space

Visitors first enter a transitional area that promotes relaxation and prepares them for meditation. This space acts as a buffer, allowing individuals to leave behind their belongings and the outside noise. It sets the stage for a focused mental journey, encouraging participants to disconnect from their daily routines.

Meditation Zone

At the heart of the design is a small body of water, lit from below to create a soothing ambiance. Water droplets fall from above, creating gentle ripples that echo throughout the room. The soft sound of water enhances the meditative experience, helping to calm the mind and body as users engage in their practice. This auditory element is crucial in promoting a peaceful atmosphere.

Cultural Significance

Water is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, symbolizing peace and purification. By incorporating this element, the design connects the Reflestone to traditional practices, such as public baths and onsens. This integration enriches the sensory experience and anchors the space in cultural heritage, reinforcing its role as a personal retreat for self-exploration and tranquility.

The design also emphasizes a balance between light and shadow, inviting users to embrace moments of stillness. This thoughtful arrangement creates a welcoming environment for individuals seeking to reflect and find clarity amidst the pace of urban life.
