At the heart of the design lies a bird opera installation on cut tree stems, complemented by adaptable triangular lounges and a timber food court that fosters social interaction in a forested setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
A bird opera installation integrates avian habitats within the design.
02
Triangular lounges create unique seating arrangements promoting social interaction.
03
Modular structures offer versatile configurations for various uses.
04
The design avoids cutting down trees, emphasizing ecological preservation.
05
Timber sourced locally enhances sustainability and aesthetic harmony.

The design is located in a wooded area and aims to create new experiences for festivals and concerts. It follows the philosophy of Sansusi, which encourages a thoughtful relationship between the built environment and nature. The goal is to develop a versatile food court that can host many people while ensuring ease of movement and comfort in an inviting space.

Modular Structures

The project employs modular structures characterized by different lengths, heights, and configurations. These elements resemble Jenga blocks, inviting users to interact with their surroundings. A central module, measuring 20x20 cm, serves as a flexible foundation for various arrangements, allowing for adaptable seating and gathering spaces that cater to the needs of festival-goers.

Functional Layout

Careful planning resulted in a layout that places several focal points throughout the site. This organization encourages easy movement and social interaction. Multiple courtyards are formed to ensure that structures do not group too closely together, maintaining the natural landscape's integrity. Seating options include long benches, elevated seats, and versatile tables, designed for comfort and different uses.

Environmental Integration

Sustainability is a key aspect of the design. No trees are cut down, which helps preserve the natural habitat. The project uses timber from the surrounding area, showcasing the benefits of locally sourced materials. This approach creates a building that works with the environment instead of against it, reinforcing a commitment to ecological awareness.

Auditory Experience

A unique aspect of the design is an installation called the bird opera, placed on cut tree stems. This feature enhances the soundscape of the area, making it more engaging for visitors. There is also a sound installation made of curved metal plates that create interesting sounds when pebbles collide with them. These elements add to the sensory experience, inviting people to connect more deeply with the site and its surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
