Wooden Segments and Spiraling Steps Creating Refuge in Urban Tokyo

Project in-detail

Elevated above the urban landscape, wooden segments define a meditation space that integrates spiraling steps and adaptable openings, offering a tranquil environment for personal reflection amidst the bustle of Tokyo.
5 key facts about this project
01
Filtration concept allows users to adjust their experience through varying window openings.
02
Upper-level space is elevated, providing physical and psychological distance from urban noise.
03
Spiraling steps create a seamless transition between public and private areas.
04
Wooden segments are designed for flexibility and adaptability across different locations.
05
Natural light is emphasized with strategically placed skylights that enhance the interior atmosphere.

The design is located in Tokyo, positioned within the bustling urban environment to address the need for a peaceful refuge from city life. It features a structure that combines a meditation area on the upper level with an open public space below. The overall concept focuses on separating the tranquility of meditation from the noise of the city, providing a place for both reflection and community interaction.

Upper Level Meditation Space
The upper floor serves as the main meditation area, elevated to create a distance from the distractions of the city. This space is designed to be calming, encouraging quiet thoughts and personal reflection. The spiraling steps leading to this area not only connect the two levels but also ease the transition from the public space below to the more private meditation room.

Lower Level Urban Pavilion
The lower level acts as an urban pavilion that is fully accessible to everyone. This open space minimizes the installation's footprint and invites community gathering. It serves as a resting area and a place for people to exchange stories. The design emphasizes interaction with the surrounding environment, highlighting the value of shared experiences in an urban setting.

Filtration Concept
A key theme in the design is "Filtration," which aims to help users manage urban distractions. Different levels of openings in the architecture allow users to adjust their experience within the space. By changing the window settings, individuals can create various atmospheres. This flexibility enables users to tailor their meditative practices and find a comfortable state of mind.

Natural Light Integration
Natural light is carefully incorporated through well-placed skylights and windows, enhancing the interior while also separating it from outside noise. This attention to light makes the space brighter and more inviting. It also changes the atmosphere throughout the day, supporting different needs for reflection and relaxation.

The design highlights the importance of creating peaceful spaces in urban settings. Thoughtful details are included to encourage flexibility and a connection with nature. Windows and skylights contribute to the overall experience of the meditation area, making it an extension of its environment, inviting people to engage with both the space and themselves.
