5 key facts about this project
The Gorge is situated in a forest clearing inland in Latvia, designed as a venue for performance art that emphasizes interaction between performers and audience while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The project seeks to integrate built elements with the natural context, encouraging a communal atmosphere and heightened sensory experience.
Spatial Configuration and Material Strategy
The stage is composed of timber platforms at varying elevations, echoing the topography of the site and allowing dynamic movement across the performance area. Seating is arranged to resemble a rocky outcrop, incorporating existing trees to provide shade and continuity with the forest setting. This layout fosters an immersive experience and positions spectators within the natural terrain rather than separate from it.
Light, Sound, and Environmental Integration
A lightweight roof structure, constructed from recycled translucent foil, diffuses daylight across the venue while preserving visual access to the sky. The structure is supported by recycled steel poles, which double as wind organs—emitting subtle sounds as wind passes through them. These auditory elements, in combination with ambient natural sounds such as rustling leaves, contribute to a layered acoustic environment that evolves throughout the day, reinforcing the project's integration with its context.
