04

05
Sensory elements enhance the guest experience, integrating sight, sound, touch, and smell.

Tairongo, known as the cabin of "senses," is located within the Earth Energy Sanctuary and serves as a retreat aimed at promoting relaxation within a natural landscape. Positioned just an hour's drive from Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga, the cabin offers a quiet environment for individuals and groups looking to step away from the demands of daily life. The design encourages mindfulness, helping guests to focus on the present moment.

Conceptual Framework

The design of Tairongo is based on the idea of "Living in the Moment," emphasizing the importance of being present and reducing stress. This concept is brought to life through Phenomenology Architecture, which incorporates sensory experiences into the layout of the cabin. The aim is to encourage visitors to connect with nature and engage fully with their surroundings.

Spatial Organization

The arrangement of spaces in Tairongo carefully balances privacy and flow, demonstrating a clear understanding of how people use the environment. Strategic use of lighting and shadow creates a calming atmosphere that enhances relaxation. This layout is designed to support therapies offered in the cabin, highlighting how architecture can play a role in well-being.

Material Selection

Tairongo features materials such as weatherboard with a wood pattern, steel gutters, and metal roof tiles. These choices are made with sustainability in mind and help to create a visual link to the surrounding environment. Natural materials contribute to the overall sensory experience and assist in integrating the cabin with its natural context.

Sustainability Features

The design incorporates sustainable elements, including a self-generated electrical system and water collection and recycling mechanisms. This focus on ecological practices ensures that Tairongo functions efficiently within its environment. The consideration of sustainability aligns with the overall mission of providing a peaceful retreat.

Guests experience a range of sensory elements that enhance their stay: visual perspectives that draw attention to the valley, a variety of tactile finishes, the soothing sounds of flowing water, and natural aromas from the landscape. Each aspect of the design works together to create a setting that promotes relaxation and well-being.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
