The Monte d'Oiro project is situated in Aldeia Galega da Merceana, Portugal, where it combines contemporary design with the historical tradition of winemaking. Located within a vineyard, the project is designed to meet various visitor needs while respecting the surrounding landscape. The main idea is to build a connection between the constructed spaces and the natural environment, using forms that adapt to the topography of the site.

Circulation and Spatial Arrangement

The layout consists of two primary areas: a hotel and a common social space. These areas are arranged in circular patterns that change position at different heights. This configuration allows for varied interactions between indoor and outdoor settings, enhancing the views of the vineyard and creating an engaging experience for guests. The design encourages movement, featuring pathways that guide visitors through open corridors. Walking through the site is meant to evoke the feeling of wandering through vineyard rows.

Functional Zoning

The project divides spaces into distinct zones, providing clear areas for activities such as playrooms, a gym, a spa, and event spaces. This organization supports efficient use of the site while catering to a range of activities. Key facilities, like the indoor pool and communal areas, are thoughtfully placed to encourage social interaction while also promoting relaxation.

Materiality and Environmental Integration

Materials chosen for the project include Chukum, glass, wood, grain stone, and water. Each of these materials was selected based on its relationship to the environment and its functional qualities. They work together to create a cohesive visual identity, allowing the building to connect with its natural surroundings. The materials also enhance the sensory experience, drawing attention to the relationship between indoor spaces and outdoor landscapes.

Aesthetic Details

The project pays careful attention to how the design interacts with the environment. Water features are integral, with the soothing sounds of water flowing from the pool creating a calming atmosphere. This feature aims to deepen the visitor's engagement with the landscape, emphasizing a celebration of winemaking through practical and thoughtful design choices. The focus is on creating an inviting space where nature and architecture coexist harmoniously.
