5 key facts about this project
Descent from Hverfjall is located in the Mývatn region of northern Iceland, with the Hverfjall volcano as a prominent backdrop. The structure functions as a coffee shop, designed to fit naturally with the volcanic landscape. The shape of the building reflects the volcano's symmetry, rising from a square base while offering various views, reminiscent of traditional Icelandic turf houses.
Site Integration
The design connects with the landscape, featuring a pathway that follows the natural slope, leading visitors from hiking trails directly to the coffee shop. Stairs on the exterior evoke the rugged characteristics of the area, creating a link between the environment and the built structure.
Spatial Experience
Inside, the arrangement focuses on enhancing the visitor experience through the use of natural light. Ribbon windows are aligned at eye height, allowing sunlight to illuminate the space while maintaining a sense of intimacy. This setup encourages a relationship between indoors and outdoors, enabling visitors to appreciate the surrounding landscape from within.
Material Selection
Materials are carefully chosen to support the overall design. The exterior is made with concrete that includes volcanic ash, connecting visually with the dark tones of the environment. Inside, weathering steel distinguishes the core of the coffee shop, subtly separating it from the outside. Burnt wood, treated with the Shou Sugi Ban technique, is used for some interior details, adding texture and further linking the interior design to the volcanic setting.
The layout promotes a continuous flow between different spaces, where boundaries between inside and outside diminish. Visitors can feel the presence of nature surrounding them, even as they enjoy the functional aspects of the coffee shop. Each detail serves to strengthen the connection to the striking landscape.
