Vertical Gardens and Prefabricated Concrete Panels Redefining Urban Living Above Train Tracks

Project in-detail

Constructed above existing railway tracks, this design utilizes prefabricated concrete panels and vertical gardens to create a sustainable urban housing solution that fosters community interaction and accessibility.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes air rights above active railway tracks for innovative urban housing.
02
Incorporates modular prefabricated concrete construction for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
03
Features vertical gardens that enhance biodiversity and provide green space for residents.
04
Color-coded units facilitate easy identification and enhance the project's visual appeal.
05
Integrates communal areas at ground level to promote social interactions among residents.
"The Section House" is an architectural project situated in Paris, France, designed to address the critical issue of affordable housing in urban areas. By leveraging space above an existing railway line, this project proposes a stratified approach to housing that maximizes urban density while maintaining aesthetic and functional integrity. The design encompasses modular units that allow for varied living arrangements, including studios and multi-bedroom apartments, integrating communal and commercial spaces to cultivate a vibrant community atmosphere.

Innovative Use of Space
The project's unique utilization of air rights above railway tracks distinguishes it from conventional developments. By constructing above existing infrastructure, "The Section House" minimizes the land footprint, thus contributing to urban infill strategies. The design incorporates color-coded modular units that facilitate easy navigation and identification of different apartment types. This modularity not only provides flexibility in configuration but also lends itself to efficient manufacturing and assembly processes.

The inclusion of open communal spaces at the ground level is a crucial aspect of the design. These areas are designed to foster social interaction, with pathways, gardens, and commercial units seamlessly integrated into the overall layout. This encourages a sense of community and accessibility, setting the project apart from typical residential developments that often prioritize individual units over community engagement.

Focus on Sustainability and Materiality
A significant element of "The Section House" is its commitment to sustainability through material selection and energy-efficient design. The architectural framework employs prefabricated concrete panels that deliver both structural support and energy efficiency. The use of glass in the façade enhances natural lighting while contributing to passive solar heating. Additionally, green insulation materials are integrated to meet modern environmental standards.

Vertical gardens are introduced within the design to not only enhance biodiversity but also to mitigate the urban heat island effect. This approach aligns with contemporary architectural ideas that prioritize ecological responsibility. The project's emphasis on green building practices reflects an understanding of the challenges faced by urban environments and the need for resilient design solutions.

By integrating these unique design approaches, "The Section House" presents a holistic model for urban living that marries aesthetic appeal with functional requirements. The balance of private and communal spaces, along with its sustainable focus, positions this project as a forward-thinking solution to urban housing challenges.

For a comprehensive understanding of "The Section House," including in-depth architectural plans and sections that further illustrate the design's nuances, readers are encouraged to explore the project's detailed presentation. This will provide valuable insights into the architectural designs and ideas that shape this innovative housing solution.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
