The Stable Stack observation tower is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve and serves visitors of Kurgi Farm. Its design transforms a traditional horse stable into a vertical structure that enhances views of the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the local heritage of horse breeding, the project balances traditional elements with contemporary features, creating a space for visitors to connect with the natural environment.

Design Concept and Structure

The design draws on the familiar form of horse stables, using it as a conceptual foundation. The initial mass is segmented into independent enclosures, allowing for distinct functional areas within the tower. This segmentation creates a variety of experiences, as the stacked enclosures rise above the landscape, inviting exploration and engagement with nature.

Visitor Experience

The rotation of the segmented enclosures improves views from various angles, enriching the experience for guests. As visitors ascend the tower, they encounter different perspectives of the Latvian countryside, fostering a deeper appreciation for the surroundings. This thoughtful arrangement encourages individuals to interact with and enjoy the changing scenery.

Connection to Landscape

A strong relationship with the environment is emphasized through the stretching and arrangement of the enclosures. The design enhances specific views and guides visitors toward notable sights in the area. As guests ascend, they progressively reveal wider vistas that deepen their connection with the landscape.

Functional Integration

While the specific materials used in the construction are not detailed, the emphasis on traditional forms suggests a likely incorporation of local materials. This practice supports sustainability and aligns the structure with its context. The design echoes the architectural style of the area while fulfilling its purpose as an observation point.

The upper viewpoint of the observation tower provides expansive sightlines, allowing visitors to connect with the vast landscape and sky.
