The Lake Mývatn Community House project is an architectural endeavor designed to serve as a central hub for social interaction and community activities in the Lake Mývatn region of Iceland. This project aims to foster connectivity between the local population and the surrounding natural environment while addressing essential communal functions. The architectural design incorporates various spaces dedicated to multifaceted uses, including a visitor center, a multi-purpose hall, and areas for agriculture and resource sharing. The integration of the architecture into the landscape reflects both the local identity and commitment to ecological sustainability.

Sustainability is a key aspect of this project, with a focus on utilizing local materials and innovative design strategies. The buildings will feature turf roofs, in line with traditional Icelandic architecture, which not only provide insulation but also promote biodiversity. These living roofs are designed to harmonize with the natural contours of the landscape, reducing visual impact and enhancing ecological functions. The use of wood for structural elements and cladding, alongside stone for durability and visual cohesion, illustrates an emphasis on long-lasting, environmentally responsible design. The incorporation of natural light through expansive glazing in key areas fosters a connection between interior spaces and the outdoor environment.

One of the notable elements of the Lake Mývatn Community House project is its adaptive approach to design. The multi-purpose hall is conceptualized to be flexible, accommodating a range of community events and activities. This adaptability aligns with the community's evolving needs and enhances the multifunctional use of the space. Furthermore, a tools and material sharing area is included to promote resource efficiency among residents. This focus on shared community resources showcases an innovative solution to sustainability while fostering communal ties.

The architectural layout of the project emphasizes movement and accessibility through distinct pathways that interlink various structures. These paths encourage exploration and engagement within the site, promoting interactions among users of the space. The design takes into consideration the local climate and landscape, utilizing natural drainage systems to manage water runoff effectively, thereby minimizing environmental impact.

This project represents more than just a physical space; it embodies the values of community cohesion, environmental stewardship, and functional design. The juxtaposition of communal and natural elements within the architecture provides a unique context for residents and visitors alike. For a more thorough understanding of the architectural plans and sections, exploring the detailed presentation of the Lake Mývatn Community House is highly recommended. This exploration will provide insights into the architectural ideas and innovative design approaches that define this important project.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
