Transparent Frame Tower With Metal Sheets Overlooking Geological Features

Project in-detail

The observation tower, constructed with a transparent frame and clad in metal sheets, offers panoramic views of the surrounding fissures and geological features while providing a space for visitor engagement and exploration.
5 key facts about this project
01
The tower symbolizes the tectonic plates of Europe and America through its unique dual structure.
02
The solid core includes a viewing platform offering 360-degree vistas of the landscape.
03
An underground visitor center minimizes visual impact while providing essential amenities.
04
Solar panels integrated into the walking path support the site’s energy needs.
05
Wire mesh railings enhance safety while allowing natural light to benefit solar functions.

The observation tower is positioned to represent the relationship between the tectonic plates of Europe and America. Set within the landscape surrounding Hverfjall mountain and the Kvennagjà and Karlagjà caves, the design merges functionality with sensitivity to the environment. The concept features a dual structure made up of a transparent frame and a solid core, highlighting the contrasts inherent in the geological context.

Design Structure

The design of the tower facilitates an engaging experience for visitors. The gap between the two main components serves as an entrance, welcoming users into an immersive space. The solid core leads to a viewing platform offering broad views of the landscape, including the fissure and nearby natural formations. Positioned on the south side, these platforms maximize daylight and frame the scenic surroundings.

Visitor Center

Next to the tower, the visitor center is built underground, making it less noticeable while still accessible. This design choice protects the overall visual appeal of the site, allowing the tower to stand out prominently. The center features essential facilities such as a bar, office areas, restrooms, and washing facilities for visitors who have spent time in the nearby caves. The path from the visitor center to the tower is designed to reduce elevation changes, creating a straightforward journey between the indoor and outdoor areas.

Materiality and Sustainability

The tower’s structure relies mainly on steel, with the solid core covered in metal sheets that contrast with the warm wood found inside. Concrete is used in the construction of the visitor center, providing a sturdy base while blending with the surrounding terrain. The walking path leading to the tower is minimalist, also made of steel, and includes solar panels that generate energy to support its operations. This feature demonstrates a focus on sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

Railings along the paths are made of wire mesh, allowing sunlight to reach the solar panels while ensuring visitor safety. This balance of aesthetics and practicality contributes to the overall design, reinforcing the connection between the built environment and its geological foundation. Special details enhance the architectural concept, emphasizing simplicity while inviting exploration and appreciation of the natural landscape.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
