Transparent ETFE Facade Integrating Photovoltaic Panels Amid Icelandic Geothermal Landscape

Project in-detail

Constructed with a dynamic ETFE façade that harnesses solar energy, the building seamlessly integrates with the geothermal landscape of Iceland to serve as an interactive observation space for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with a transparent ETFE façade that adapts to light, enhancing the visitor experience.
02
Incorporates a rainwater harvesting system that reduces environmental impact.
03
Features large openings resembling eyes, creating engaging vantage points of the landscape.
04
Includes integrated photovoltaic panels within the façade to support energy needs.
05
Utilizes honeycomb patterns in its design for optimal thermal insulation and structural integrity.
The project known as "Eyes of the Skin" is an architectural endeavor located in Grjótagjá, Iceland, an area characterized by its stunning geothermal landscape. This design integrates advanced material technology and sustainable practices, emphasizing both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The building is conceived as a landmark that reflects the natural surroundings while offering an interactive experience for visitors. The primary focus lies in the use of Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) cushions, allowing for a dynamic interplay between light and space.

Sustainability is a core principle of this project. The ETFE façade not only provides thermal efficiency but also integrates photovoltaic (PV) panels that contribute to the building’s energy needs. This focus on renewable energy sources ensures the building remains environmentally responsible while minimizing operational costs.

Unique Design Approaches and Material Use

The project distinguishes itself through its innovative use of ETFE in a honeycomb pattern. This design promotes high light transmission and insulation, which is critical in the variable Icelandic climate. The architectural form is influenced by organic shapes that mimic the natural elements of the landscape, creating a seamless transition from the interior spaces to the environment outside.

An important aspect of the design is the incorporation of large openings that resemble eyes. These features allow for enhanced visibility both into and out of the building, fostering a connection with the environment while encouraging greater engagement from visitors. The interactive experiences are further enhanced by the changing light conditions throughout the day, which alter the perception of the space.

Integrative Systems and Functionality

The functionality of "Eyes of the Skin" is defined by its system of rainwater harvesting and self-cleaning capabilities. Rainwater is collected efficiently, reducing the demand on local water resources. Additionally, the ETFE surface's properties facilitate natural cleaning processes, minimizing maintenance efforts and promoting longevity in the façade.

The architectural design also emphasizes user experience through carefully planned observational spaces within the structure. The incorporation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) alongside the ETFE cushions creates a vibrant and adaptable setting that continues to evolve with changing light and weather conditions.

To further understand the architectural intent and technical details of the "Eyes of the Skin" project, readers are encouraged to explore the architectural plans, sections, and designs presented in the project documentation. Examining these elements can provide deeper insights into the innovative architectural ideas that shape this unique design.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
