A geometrically designed skull crafted from translucent PLA and ABS invites dancers to engage directly with the urban pavement of Berlin, creating an immersive techno experience steeped in cultural significance.
5 key facts about this project
01
A modular design allows for easy assembly and disassembly of the structure.
02
The design incorporates snap-on connections for efficient transport and storage.
03
Colored lighting enhances the immersive experience within the skull structure.
04
Participants engage directly with Berlin’s original pavement instead of a traditional dance floor.
05
The project draws inspiration from the cultural themes of the Day of the Dead.

"Techno in Your Head" is a creative project designed as an engaging space for techno dancers, set in the lively environment of Berlin. The central theme revolves around a geometric interpretation of a human skull, inviting participants to immerse themselves in an atmosphere filled with light and sound. The design intends to bring together performers and audience members, making the experience one of celebration and reflection.

Design Concept

The inspiration for the design comes from Mexican culture, particularly elements associated with "the Day of the Dead." This cultural influence is clearly visible in the skull's form, which conveys themes of life and memory. The project seeks to connect users with narratives from both the city and the culture it reflects, enhancing the overall experience.

Modular Structure

A notable aspect of the project is its modular design, which allows for easy assembly and disassembly. Each section of the skull is connected with snap-on components, simplifying transport and storage in an urban setting. This thoughtful design consideration addresses modern challenges in space optimization while maintaining visual appeal.

Interaction with Environment

One key feature is the absence of a conventional dance floor. Instead of creating a separate area for dancing, the design encourages interaction with Berlin’s existing pavement. This approach fosters a deeper relationship between the event space and the urban environment. It allows participants to feel connected to the city's landscape, making the experience more integrated and authentic.

Materiality

For construction, the project specifies the use of PLA (Polylactic Acid) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). These materials were chosen because they are suitable for additive manufacturing, supporting detailed design while promoting sustainability. The white translucent finish, along with a frosted texture, diffuses light effectively. This creates a captivating visual effect during events.

Internal support components are designed to hold colored lighting and sound systems, enhancing the sensory experience. This careful attention to detail transforms the space into a vibrant setting for artistic expression.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
