Translucent Marble Niches Within An Eternal Garden Setting

Project in-detail

Translucent marble niches glow softly within a sunken garden overlooking symbolic oaks and daisies, creating a contemplative columbarium that honors the cycle of life and memory.
5 key facts about this project
01
Translucent marble covers allow niches to emit a soft glow at night.
02
The design features a circular layout to symbolize equality among the departed.
03
A sunken ring facilitates a gradual transition from forest to contemplative space.
04
Local flora, including oaks and daisies, enhance the garden's seasonal character.
05
The use of low-maintenance materials ensures longevity and sustainability in design.

The design focuses on creating a columbarium that embodies the ideas of the "Circle of Life" and the "Chamber of Memory." Located within a forest cemetery, it serves as a memorial space where memories and the spirits of the departed can be honored. Circular shapes are central to the design, symbolizing eternity and the cycles of life and death. This reflects various cultural and spiritual views on the significance of the circle as a connection to the Divine life-force.

Design Integration

The columbarium fits into the forest landscape by using an axial path that goes through a cylindrical space. This design creates a link with the existing pathways in the area. Visitors can experience a smooth transition from the dense forest into a more open and reflective environment, enhancing their overall journey.

Spatial Configuration

A key element of the design is the sunken ring, which visitors access via two ramping paths. This arrangement allows for a gradual movement from a crowded wooded area to a quieter, simpler space. The layout is centered, ensuring that each niche has equal importance. This equal status highlights the belief that all lives are valued equally in the context of memorialization.

Connection to Nature

Niches are positioned to overlook a garden that includes two significant symbols of Latvian nature: the Oak tree and Daisies. This choice of local plants helps ground the design in its geographic setting. The garden changes with the seasons, offering visitors a tranquil experience that emphasizes the connection between nature and memory. The contrast between the deciduous garden and the evergreen surroundings enriches the atmosphere.

Material Considerations

Though specific materials are not elaborated, some components such as the tessellated ring, cladding, flooring, and benches draw from local stone sources in Latvia. The decision to use translucent marble for the niche covers is especially noteworthy. This material allows the niches to emit a gentle glow at night, creating a calming effect that enhances the space. It highlights the importance of the urns while maintaining a peaceful environment.

The arrangement of paths and niches invites visitors to take a thoughtful journey through the columbarium. The design promotes a sense of reflection and connection, offering a comfortable space to honor memories within a natural setting.
