The Romantic Cabin for Two is designed as a peaceful retreat that fits well within its natural setting near the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel Ranges. The focus of the cabin is on creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. It serves as a cozy area for rest and relaxation, bringing thoughtful design and function together in a harmonious way.

Architectural Concept

The cabin's design encourages a tactile experience with its facade made from aged wood and worn materials, reflecting the local landscape. The structure's simple geometry appears to float above the entrance, while a metallic volume punctures the timber form, linking outside and inside. This choice of design not only frames views of the surroundings but also draws attention to the relationship between the building and the nature around it.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the cabin is organized into separate zones for rest and relaxation. The sleeping and bathing areas are positioned to face east so that morning light can fill the space. The sunken lounge, which is meant for relaxation, looks west to capture the sunsets. This layout enhances the purpose of each area and helps residents connect with nature throughout the day.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability plays an important role in the cabin's design. It features both cross and stacked ventilation for efficient cooling. Thermally insulating walls, floors, and roofs contribute to energy efficiency in the space. By keeping a compact footprint, the design reduces its impact on the environment while making the most of the interior space. The use of prefabricated components supports cost-effective building while lowering waste, showing a commitment to ecological principles.

Design Detail

The interior space features a range of height variations that add to the overall experience. The sunken lounge serves as a central gathering spot, while the elevated sleeping area provides privacy. Ground-level bathing areas look out onto the landscape, maintaining a connection with the outdoors during moments of solitude. This thoughtful approach to design encourages occupants to fully engage with their surroundings, creating a deeper sense of place within the cabin.
