The Vale de Moses Meditation Cabins are located in the peaceful landscape of Portugal, designed to serve as a retreat for yoga and meditation. The focus is on ecological sustainability, with a design that aims to blend naturally with the surroundings. The cabins provide versatile spaces that allow users to connect with nature while supporting mindfulness and introspection.

Design Concept

Flexibility is a key element in the design, which features a modular structure made possible through the use of portal frames. This design allows each cabin to be configured in different ways, such as completely open, partially enclosed with curtains, or fully closed off. The concept recognizes that meditation experiences can vary greatly among individuals, making it essential to offer customized environments that suit various practices.

Materiality

The cabins incorporate materials that highlight the local architectural traditions. Wooden natural shingles are used on the exteriors, a nod to the style commonly found in Portuguese buildings. Strawboard is chosen for insulation, emphasizing not only sustainability but also the use of resources that are readily available in the area. This material selection supports environmental goals while ensuring comfortable indoor conditions.

Site and Layout

The arrangement of the site is carefully planned to encourage movement and interaction among the cabins and the existing Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat. Pathways connect the various structures, providing easy access while preserving the privacy each cabin offers for meditation. Stairs link the cabins directly to the main retreat center, creating a unified relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape.

Interior features ensure that sound is kept outside, helping to create a quiet atmosphere inside for meditation. The thoughtful layout also includes communal areas that promote social interaction, allowing visitors to engage with one another while still having space for individual reflection.

The cabins are more than just functional areas; they offer a thoughtful connection to the surrounding environment. With ample natural light filtering through, the spaces create an inviting atmosphere that enhances the experience of being in this tranquil setting.
