Arbores Sapientiae is a thoughtful response to the need for community spaces in Madagascar, specifically along the Avenue of the Baobabs. The focus is on creating portable reading rooms that provide educational opportunities. The design pays special attention to the familiar Baobab tree, often referred to as the Tree of Life. This connection to the natural environment shapes the overall concept.

Concept and Layout

The design features a modular layout with various functions. It includes places for reading, exchanging books, and socializing, along with bike racks and exhibition areas. This layout encourages movement and interaction among visitors. It aims to make the space accessible to everyone, facilitating a smooth experience as people navigate through different areas.

Sustainability and Adaptability

Sustainability plays a significant role in the design. The project is intended to be replicable, allowing it to fit different environments. The modular structure adapts to various conditions, responding well to the local landscape and plant life. This ability to adjust is important and ensures that the reading rooms work well within their settings, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Material Selection

The materials chosen for the project relate closely to its purpose. A straw canopy is proposed for covering the modular structures, reinforcing the connection with nature. The vertical curved wooden posts mimic the shape of the Baobab tree and serve as support for the design. The horizontal modular wood joists provide stability, while UV-resistant plexiglass cladding protects users from rain, making the reading areas more comfortable.

Design Details

Wood panels are used for display and provide information about local events and cultural stories. This feature encourages visitors to engage with the heritage of the area. The overall design emphasizes a blend of nature and human activity. It aims to create a space where people can learn and connect with one another. The thoughtful consideration of the Baobab tree as a design element ensures that the project respects and enhances the local environment.
