The proposal for reactivating the Plattenbau focuses on enhancing the functionality of post-war housing in East Berlin. This initiative aims to redefine the structures in a way that encourages community interaction and integrates modern living concepts. Set against a backdrop of historical importance, the design seeks to create engaging public spaces that promote social connections among residents.

Open Arcade

At the core of the design is an open arcade situated at ground level. This space invites street activity and allows for social engagement. Acting as a venue for weekend markets, the arcade serves as a gathering point for both residents and visitors. It facilitates interaction and helps establish a sense of community. The income generated from these markets can also be directed toward the upkeep of the buildings.

Communal Gardens

Communal gardens are integrated on the rooftops of the apartment buildings. These green spaces provide an opportunity for residents to grow their own produce while fostering social ties among neighbors. This aspect of the design emphasizes the importance of nature in urban settings and encourages a lifestyle that values personal and communal well-being.

Branching Arrangement

The layout of the apartment buildings follows a branching design. This arrangement enhances connectivity within the complex and allows for diverse activity spaces. Intersections between the buildings are purposefully established as semi-public zones, encouraging community gatherings and shared experiences. This thoughtful layout supports an active and interactive living environment.

Materials and Sustainability

The design incorporates a focus on sustainability through careful material selection. A brick facade and a structural frame made from steel are highlighted, which ensure long-lasting durability. These materials serve practical purposes as well as aesthetic ones, contributing to the identity of the structures while standing up to the challenges of city living.

The effort to reinterpret the Plattenbau creates pathways for renewed community interaction, adapting historical architecture to meet the needs of modern urban life. Through thoughtful design elements and a commitment to sustainability, the project paves the way for a revitalized residential experience that emphasizes connection and engagement among residents.
