Bandbau: Ribbon Housing and Wohnhof is located in Berlin and aims to provide modular and affordable housing solutions. The design focuses on reclaiming urban spaces by turning wider rights-of-way into multi-modal areas known as Wohnhofs. These areas integrate both residential and commercial functions, fostering community interaction and addressing the urgent need for affordable housing.

Density and Capacity

The project emphasizes high density, estimated to be 15-18 times greater than the average in Berlin. When scaled to one hectare, the design can house between 650 and 814 people. This density not only meets the demand for affordable housing but also reduces pressure on public infrastructure, improving access to necessary services and transportation.

Modular Design

The architecture features a modular approach with units sized at 5 meters by 5 meters by 3 meters. This configuration allows for flexible use of space, giving residents the option to combine or disassemble modules according to their needs. This adaptability enhances the living experience and ensures that spaces can change as residents’ needs evolve.

Integration of Amenities

Central to the design is the inclusion of communal spaces that promote social interactions among residents. The building's stepped form provides easy access to rooftop gardens, creating welcoming shared areas for relaxation and socializing. Furthermore, ground-level commercial spaces, such as cafés and bakeries, contribute to an active street environment, enriching the neighborhood and supporting local businesses.

Sustainable Materials

The project uses sustainable materials throughout its construction. Structural elements include reclaimed wood, utilized for CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) prefabricated panels. Reclaimed slate features in the flooring and roofing, while bamboo rain screen siding enhances both the visual appeal and sustainable focus of the design. This commitment to using environmentally friendly materials minimizes ecological impact.

The design achieves a balance between private living spaces and communal areas, facilitating connections among residents while providing a high quality of life in a densely populated urban setting.
