roof village design enhances community interaction among patients and families integrates flexible ward layouts to accommodate diverse care needs strategically utilizes the mountainous terrain for optimal views and natural light repurposes existing buildings to maintain the historical character of the area includes communal spaces that encourage social engagement and creative expression.

The HEAL'L project is situated in Seoul, South Korea, and focuses on blending the realities of life and death in an urban environment. It aims to reshape how hospice care is perceived by integrating services into the community rather than isolating them. The design concept emphasizes compassion, accessibility, and open engagement with end-of-life experiences, providing support for patients and their families in a welcoming setting.

Spatial Integration

The approach involves transforming existing structures to form a roof village, combining modern hospice functions with the historical character of the area. This strategy respects local architecture while ensuring that essential healthcare services are available. The roof village is designed to interact harmoniously with the hilly landscape, enhancing the overall visual impact and fostering a connection to nature.

Community Engagement

Open access and connectivity are key features, with several entrances and pathways facilitating movement throughout the facility. This layout encourages a sense of belonging, making the hospice inviting for visitors and functional for residents. Flexible ward designs cater to various patient needs, promoting comfort and ease for families who wish to engage more closely with their loved ones.

Supportive Environments

The inclusion of communal spaces like libraries, dining areas, and art centers promotes social interaction. These shared areas make the hospice feel more like a part of the community rather than a place of isolation. By allowing for emotional expression and connection, these environments help create a supportive atmosphere, which is essential during the end-of-life process.

Sustainable Practices

While specific materials are not detailed, the project emphasizes the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. By enhancing current structures, the design aligns with environmental practices and minimizes the need for new materials. This strategy not only maintains the neighborhood's character but also provides a practical approach to integrating hospice care into urban life.

The thoughtful design features create an environment where patients can find comfort in their final days while staying connected to their families and the surrounding community. Each element contributes to a sense of peace and support, essential for navigating life’s final chapter.
