The Navigli Canal restoration project in Milan aims to revive a significant waterway that has been an important part of the city's history. Located at Site 08 Parco Archeologico, the canal will be brought back into the urban environment as a multifunctional area that emphasizes sustainability and community involvement. The main design idea integrates the canal's rich heritage with modern urban life, creating a lively space for social activities throughout the year.

Restoration and Sustainable Practices

The project focuses on restoring the Navigli Canal to its former state while promoting environmentally friendly practices. Biofiltration planting techniques are proposed to clean the water in the canal, while features like bioswales and sponge parks will help manage flooding and control water levels. The redesign of nearby parks into urban farms supports local agriculture and adds ecological value to the area.

Programmatic Integration

A well-defined program is key to activating the canal as an important social space for Milan. Events are organized into three main categories: Green Commerce, Play & Rest, and Art & Cultural. For example, the De Naviglio Festival will feature vertical farming and urban gardens, creating educational opportunities around seasonal produce. At the same time, popular events like Fashion Week will include an interactive LED runway that connects the traditional and the contemporary.

Barge Design and Functionality

An interesting element of the design is the trapezoidal barges specifically created to support different activities along the canal. These barges can move along the water, float, anchor, or settle on land, providing flexibility for various events throughout the year. Each setup can include solar-powered platforms that serve as energy sources, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices in every aspect of the project.

The design aims to turn the Navigli Canal into a vibrant public space. Through unique programming and adaptable features, it encourages greater community interaction while honoring the canal's historical significance.
