The Last Genocide Memorial serves to honor the memory of those lost to genocide across history. It is located on an important axis that connects the Formal Gardens and the Memorial Plaza, allowing visitors to engage with it from multiple viewpoints within the park. The design centers around the theme of erasure, capturing the impact of these significant events while providing a space devoted to reflection and education.

Design Concept

The memorial integrates into the natural surroundings, emphasizing the theme of erasure. Reflective glass surfaces create an interesting visual effect, allowing visitors to see themselves alongside the memorial. This aspect draws attention to the connection between individual experiences and collective memories, inviting a deeper engagement with the issues at hand.

Experiential Journey

Entering the memorial, visitors encounter a solitary steel door, which serves as the only point of viewable access from a distance. This door represents the disjunction often associated with historical narratives. Inside, the space feels confined and intense. Dark walls and an uneven basalt stone floor contribute to an atmosphere that encourages reflection. The use of minimal natural light, filtered through a skylight, further deepens this somber environment, prompting visitors to contemplate the weight of what the memorial represents.

Educational Elements

Inside, steel panels present stories and impacts of various genocides, merging information with architectural structure. These panels play an essential role in educating visitors about difficult subjects while remaining part of the overall design. The layout of the memorial guides visitors through a gradual exploration of these narratives, allowing for an interactive and thoughtful engagement with the topic.

Overall Impact

The memorial stands out by focusing on both remembrance and education. It serves as a reminder of loss while also fostering a space for learning. The reflective surfaces invite visitors to think about their own identities in relation to history. As day turns to night, the interplay of light and shadow highlights the memorial’s form, encouraging quiet contemplation on the complex stories it holds within.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
