The use of reclaimed wood for the façade not only enhances sustainability but also supports cross-ventilation, creating a functional and comfortable living space for two families near the lake.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reclaimed wood sourced locally enhances sustainability and connects with the environment.
02
Large, high windows provide panoramic views of the lake and abundant natural light.
03
An enclosed interior courtyard offers a protective microclimate for outdoor activities.
04
Cross-ventilation is maximized through strategically placed openings throughout the structure.
05
Designed to accommodate two families, promoting privacy alongside communal living spaces.

The Safe Haven Barn project is located by a scenic lake, designed to create a comfortable living space for its occupants. By retaining the footprint of the existing structure, it maximizes natural light and sun exposure while forming a strong bond with the surrounding environment. The concept focuses on blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing residents to connect with nature and gain privacy through thoughtful architectural choices.

Design Inspiration

The architectural form takes cues from local building traditions, reflecting the history of the area. The layout consists of two main volumes connected by a communal space, suitable for accommodating two families. This setup fosters a balance between private areas and shared spaces, promoting social interaction without sacrificing individual privacy.

Connection to Nature

A key element of the design is its strong link to the nearby lake. Large windows allow for abundant natural light and create a view that brings the outdoor landscape into the living spaces. This thoughtful integration enhances the experience of being in nature and enables the building to adapt to the changing weather while keeping views of the lake prominent.

Materials and Sustainability

The project employs a wood frame structure, selected for its lightness and compatibility with the local environment. Insulated panels improve energy efficiency, and the ventilated façade reduces heat transfer, critical for maintaining comfort inside. The exterior features reclaimed wood sourced from the area, reinforcing the connection to the landscape while following sustainable practices.

Innovative Solutions

Cross-ventilation is achieved by placing windows strategically, helping regulate indoor temperatures and improve air quality. Modern energy-efficient systems, including solar panels on the roof and a water heat pump, support the project's eco-friendly goals. The large, floor-to-ceiling windows not only flood the interiors with light but also frame the views of the landscape, allowing residents to enjoy the natural beauty surrounding them throughout the day.

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
