Recycling Village is an architectural project situated in Skútustaðahreppur and Þingeyjarsveit, Iceland. The design focuses on sustainability and community engagement, embodying principles of the circular economy. By utilizing modular construction, the project fosters a sense of community ownership and participation, encouraging residents to engage in sustainable practices.

The core function of the Recycling Village is to serve as a community hub that promotes learning and environmental stewardship. Its layout consists of several modular units, each designated for diverse activities such as workshops, collaborative spaces, and educational zones. This design allows for versatility and gradual expansion based on the local community's evolving needs.

Unique Design Approaches and Materiality

Recycling Village distinguishes itself through a modular and phased construction approach that allows for community involvement and adaptability. The design incorporates reclaimed wood and recycled materials, eliminating waste and promoting sustainability. The extensive use of recycled panels and eco-sandwich panels enhances thermal efficiency, minimizing energy consumption within the buildings.

Another notable feature is the integration of educational workshops focusing on recycling processes, notably the "Precious Plastics" initiative. This program aims to equip community members with skills related to recycling and upcycling, encouraging innovative practices in waste management.

Additionally, the architectural design incorporates rainwater harvesting systems and solar panels, further emphasizing a commitment to environmental sustainability. The project illustrates a functional approach to waste management, featuring defined zones for organic and non-organic waste collection, thus promoting collective responsibility.

Architectural Collaboration and Community Focus

The architectural approach promotes interaction through open and inviting communal spaces tailored to community activities. The arrangement of the modules is intentional, fostering social cohesion and an inclusive atmosphere. The design considers the psychological aspects of architecture, creating a welcoming environment that resonates with the community.

The project champions long-term viability through its adaptable design, allowing for modification in response to community needs over time. This ensures that Recycling Village remains relevant and functional as a community resource while maintaining a commitment to eco-friendly practices.

For those interested in further exploring the architectural details, including plans and sections, reviewing the architectural designs and concepts will provide valuable insights into the unique elements of this project. Engaging with the presentation materials can uncover the comprehensive strategies employed in creating a sustainable community hub that aligns with contemporary environmental goals.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
