The project located in Victoria addresses the complex historical and cultural issues tied to the site, particularly those involving the Wurundjeri Community. It serves as a social meeting space, integrating Indigenous identity with contemporary urban experiences. Through its thoughtful design, the project aims to foster a sense of community while addressing the lasting effects of colonialism.

Design Concept

The design focuses on creating spaces that balance community interaction with individual privacy. Housing units are arranged in a modular format, allowing residents to customize their living spaces. Communal areas are designed to encourage social connections among residents, cultivating a feeling of belonging and honoring the deep connection that Indigenous people have with the land.

Materials

Sustainability is a key aspect of the design, reflected in the choice of materials. Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is the main structural element, selected for its strength and environmental benefits. Local reclaimed timber is used for wall panels, further emphasizing a link to the surrounding environment and showcasing Indigenous values of responsible land use.

Community Integration

Incorporating urban farming into the design highlights its commitment to community involvement. This feature supports discussions about food sovereignty and strengthens social ties among residents. By integrating agricultural practices into the urban landscape, the project enhances resilience and fosters local traditions, creating spaces for meaningful exchanges.

Cultural Reflection

The architectural design acknowledges its historical context, particularly the effects of colonialism on the Wurundjeri Community. It considers the role of architecture in promoting reconciliation. The form and function of the building respond directly to these narratives, blending aesthetics with a thoughtful examination of Indigenous heritage.

The design culminates in communal areas that invite gathering and interaction. Natural light pours through large openings, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces, and enhancing the experience. This focus on light and openness solidifies the project's dedication to environmental harmony and vibrant community life.
