Rammed Earth Observatory Embracing Icelandic Fissures and Landscape

Project in-detail

Rammed earth walls, shaped by the natural fissures of the Icelandic landscape, create a distinctive observatory that serves as a contemplative space for reflection and engagement with the surrounding environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rammed earth construction is used for structural walls, enhancing durability and integration with the landscape.
02
The observatory features strategically framed views that connect visitors to the surrounding geological features.
03
A contemplative space is located beneath the main observatory, promoting reflection before exploring the landscape.
04
In-situ cast concrete incorporates regional stone aggregates, creating a unique textural surface reflective of the local geology.
05
Pathways leading to the observatory emphasize a journey through the landscape, enhancing the experience of nature.

Set against the distinct landscape of Iceland, the design features an observatory and contemplative space that encourages visitors to interact with the natural surroundings. The overall concept invites exploration and reflection, integrating built forms into the vast terrain of this unique environment. The pathways leading to the observatory create a journey, allowing individuals to experience different atmospheres that foster a deeper connection with nature.

Concept and Journey

The design emphasizes the importance of exploration, where the observatory serves as both a destination and a transition point. Visitors embark on a journey along thoughtfully designed paths that guide them through the landscape. Each pathway reveals unique aspects of the terrain, inviting individuals to delve into the beauty of the Icelandic environment while promoting moments of introspection.

Materiality and Structure

Reinforced rammed earth is used for the structural walls, contributing to the durability of the building. The combination of in-situ cast concrete mixed with regional stone aggregates enhances the tactile quality of the structure. This choice of materials supports the building's strength and creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow within its spaces.

Pathways and Spatial Experience

The ground floor connects several pathways, leading visitors toward the observatory while promoting a sense of flow and continuity. These pathways encourage smooth transitions between indoor and outdoor experiences. The design aims to draw attention to the surrounding landscape through carefully framed views, enriching visitors' understanding of their environment as they move through the space.

Observatory and Contemplation Space

The observatory acts as a prominent platform that opens up to expansive views of the Icelandic landscape. Situated beneath, the contemplation area provides a tranquil space for reflection, allowing visitors to pause before continuing their exploration. By aligning architectural elements with the natural terrain, the design fosters a deeper appreciation for the landscape’s features, encouraging visitors to connect with the environment on a meaningful level.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
