Rammed Earth and Pine Structure Embedded in Forest Canopy for Yoga Retreat

Project in-detail

Constructed with rammed earth and locally sourced pine, this yoga retreat integrates seamlessly into the forest environment, emphasizing sustainability and fostering a connection to nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using rammed earth, enhancing thermal mass and insulation properties.
02
Large glass façades promote natural light while connecting interior spaces to the forest.
03
Pine wood sourced locally fosters ecological responsibility and warmth in the interiors.
04
Rainwater harvesting system integrated into the structure for sustainable water management.
05
Curvilinear roof design inspired by yoga poses reflects flexibility and harmony with nature.
The architectural project "Bhujangasana," situated in Vale de Moses Shala, is designed as a dedicated space for yoga and wellness activities. This structure encapsulates the principles of sustainable design while emphasizing the integration of natural surroundings. Serving as a retreat, the project aims to foster both physical and mental well-being, aligning closely with the core ideals of yoga practice.

The building features a contemporary architectural style characterized by large glass façades that create a seamless transition between the interior and the natural environment. This design decision not only maximizes natural light but also establishes a visual connection with the surrounding landscape, enhancing the overall user experience. The structure is responsive to its locale, utilizing local materials and construction methods that reflect the cultural and environmental context of the region.

Sustainable design elements are prominent throughout "Bhujangasana". The roof is constructed to collect rainwater while integrating energy-efficient systems such as heat pumps and solar panels. These efforts contribute to a reduced carbon footprint and operational efficiency, underscoring the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Architectural Forms and Material Choices

One of the distinguishing characteristics of "Bhujangasana" is its architectural form. The design takes inspiration from the Bhujangasana yoga pose, which symbolizes flexibility and balance. The curvature of the roof signifies a dynamic architectural language, promoting a dialogue between human activity and natural forces.

Material choices are critical to the project's identity. The use of locally sourced pine wood enhances the interior warmth and aligns with sustainable practices. Additionally, elements such as rammed earth and compacted local earth are integrated into the construction, providing thermal mass and aiding in temperature regulation. This thoughtful selection of materials not only supports sustainability but also adds to the aesthetic palette of the project.

Functional Layout and Spatial Organization

The spatial organization of "Bhujangasana" is crafted to support various wellness activities within a coherent layout. The main yoga studio forms the central space, designed for versatility to accommodate different practices and group sizes. Adjacent areas include essential amenities such as kitchens and dressing rooms, fostering a communal atmosphere among users.

The strategic positioning of the building on the hillside optimizes privacy while retaining beautiful sightlines. This aspect not only enhances the acoustic experience within the studio but also allows users to connect with the tranquility of the forested surroundings.
