"Urban Sun Mao" integrates portable reading rooms into urban settings, tackling the issue of social isolation commonly found in crowded cities. Positioned at the edges of modern buildings and within local communities, these spaces aim to change underused areas into lively centers for interaction and connection. The design operates under the theme of the "Communicator Machine," which seeks to promote positive social engagement among residents.

Conceptual Framework

The project emphasizes that architecture can play a vital role in creating an interactive urban life. By turning neglected spaces into functional areas, it addresses the challenges of poor street design. The focus is on promoting dialogue and socializing, which allows people to engage meaningfully with their environment and each other.

Cultural Integration

Cultural identity is an essential aspect of the design, reflecting the diverse stories that enhance urban life. The project's emphasis on Taihu Lake Stone appreciation highlights a commitment to incorporating local heritage into its framework. This blending of the new and the traditional not only enriches the reading spaces aesthetically but also connects the project to its historical roots, fostering a sense of community.

Operational Design Elements

The reading rooms include an innovative system of book lockers and an exchange framework. Users can order books online, making access to literature easier. This feature combines modern technology with traditional reading practices, ensuring convenience for residents. It encourages a love of reading and helps to connect individuals to knowledge in a meaningful way.

Spatial Dynamics

Circulation within the reading rooms is organized thoughtfully, drawing inspiration from the window frames of Suzhou gardens. This design approach introduces the concept of "A Borrowed Scene," enhancing the interaction between the reading rooms and their urban surroundings. Practical elements, such as rubber strips for waterproofing, ensure the durability of the reading spaces. These choices make it possible for the rooms to remain inviting and functional in various weather conditions.

The portable reading rooms provide calm environments that encourage people to engage with literature, whether in printed books or digital formats. They invite individuals to pause and reflect, establishing valuable connections with the written word.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
