The welcoming center at Grótagjá is situated near the famous Grótagjá caves, blending tourist facilities with the unique geological features of the area. The design takes advantage of the tectonic fault that divides two continents. This relationship between the building and the land is central to the project. It serves not only as a point of interest for tourists but also as a way to appreciate the geological wonders present in the landscape.

Design Intent and Functionality

The center’s lower structure rises gently from the ground. It is designed to harmonize with its surroundings, encouraging interaction between visitors and the natural environment. Modular platforms guide movement throughout the area, allowing for easy navigation. Specifically, there are two separate walkways: one that leads to Karlagjá and another that goes to Kvennagjá. This arrangement ensures that visitors can explore the diverse terrain more comfortably.

Observation Tower

A key feature of the design is the observation tower positioned on the other side of the fault. Visitors can reach it via a bridge extending from the main building. This bridge allows people to walk over the tectonic fault, offering impressive views of the geological features below. The tower adds to the experience, serving as a landmark that connects visitors with the unique landscape of the site.

Sustainability and Modular Design

Sustainability plays an important role in the design approach. The walkways are modular and environmentally friendly, accommodating different elevations while prioritizing safety. They can be arranged as flat paths, ramps, or steps, which allows them to adapt to the landscape. This thoughtful approach enables visitors to move across the site safely, regardless of the weather.

Unique Design Features

The walkways feature perforations that allow the ground to breathe. This design choice fosters a connection between visitors and the environment. It adds an aesthetic quality while also increasing awareness of the natural surroundings. As people explore the pathways, they engage more fully with the distinctive geological characteristics of Grótagjá, making each visit both informative and memorable.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
