Constructed from branches, leaves, and stones, the magickal circle integrates organic materials with digital panels to facilitate immersive ritual experiences centered around the elements.
5 key facts about this project
01
The circle incorporates both physical and digital elements for an enhanced interactive experience.
02
Organic materials sourced from the surrounding landscape create a direct connection to nature.
03
Cardinal directions are integrated into the design to represent elemental forces in Witchcraft.
04
The layout allows for flexibility, adapting to various environments while maintaining ecological sensitivity.
05
An empty central area facilitates ritual engagement, inviting personal interaction and reflection.

The design presents a magickal circle intended for ritual practices rooted in Witchcraft. Set in a natural environment, the circle facilitates a connection with both the elements and the spirit world. The overall concept emphasizes the integration of organic materials from the landscape, allowing participants to engage with traditions that span centuries while experiencing a modern interpretation.

MAGICKAL CIRCLE

At the heart of the design is the magickal circle, which is carefully arranged using organic materials gathered from the nearby area. The center of the circle is intentionally left empty, providing a space for rituals and interactions. Two distinct boundary layers mark the edges of the circle: the inner circle is constructed from tightly grouped branches and leaves, while the outer circle consists of smaller stones, leaves, and branches arranged with more space in between. This structure helps create a sense of safety while also allowing for a gentle transition into the surrounding natural world.

ELEMENTAL INTEGRATION

The circle incorporates the concept of elemental forces aligned with the cardinal directions, which play a vital role in many Witchcraft practices. Air is positioned to the East, Fire to the South, Water to the West, and Earth to the North. By aligning these elements within the circle, the design invites participants to connect with and contemplate their meanings, enriching the experience of the rituals performed.

ADAPTABILITY AND EDUCATIONAL PANELS

One important feature of the magickal circle is its adaptability. The design allows it to blend naturally with existing elements of the landscape. This flexibility is essential for ensuring respect toward the environment. Additionally, four digital interactive panels are placed around the circle to share educational content related to witchcraft, alchemy, astrology, and ceremonial magick. These panels correspond to the cardinal directions, enhancing the overall learning experience for visitors.

DIGITAL INTERACTION

The use of digital technology alongside the natural features creates a dialogue between traditional practices and modern engagement. The interactive panels encourage visitors to actively participate, making it easier to explore the cultural context of witchcraft. Through this connection, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the rituals and practices that take place within the circle.

As visitors walk through the magickal circle, they encounter the tactile presence of organic materials. The branches, leaves, and stones create a grounded experience, reminding them of their connection to nature and the traditions that have shaped the practices of witchcraft.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
