Natural Stone Integration and Reflective Water Features Enhance Urban Public Spaces

Project in-detail

With an emphasis on natural stone and reflective water features, the design transforms urban public spaces into engaging environments that promote community interaction and ecological awareness.
5 key facts about this project
01
Reflective water features integrate seamlessly with the landscape, enhancing sensory experiences.
02
Skylights strategically illuminate underground spaces, promoting natural light distribution.
03
Natural stone pathways reinforce the connection to the site's ecological context.
04
The design incorporates a mythological theme tied to the local water narrative.
05
Vegetation is interwoven throughout, promoting urban biodiversity and ecological awareness.
The architectural design project "UP and DOWN" is situated along the Navigli canal in Milan, Italy. This project aims to redefine the use of public space by integrating both underground and surface environments, utilizing the historical and cultural significance of water in urban life. By creating a seamless interaction between these spaces, the project fosters both social engagement and a deeper connection to the ecological context of the area.

The focus of "UP and DOWN" is to harness the inherent qualities of water, manifesting in various elements such as reflective pools and flowing water features. These components serve not only aesthetic purposes but also contribute to improving sensory experiences within the public realm. The design emphasizes accessibility and movement, with open circulation paths that guide users through different elevations of the project.

Innovative use of natural light is another notable aspect of the design. Skylights are strategically positioned to illuminate lower levels, fostering a bright and inviting atmosphere while maintaining a connection to the outside environment. This integration enhances the experience of users as they transition between heights, reinforcing the thematic focus on verticality.

Use of Materials and Construction Techniques

"UP and DOWN" employs a thoughtfully selected palette of materials that align with its architectural intent. Concrete serves a foundational role, providing robust support and durability to the structure's framework. Glass is utilized extensively to create transparency, allowing for visual integration of the interior spaces with the surrounding urban context. Natural stone is applied to enhance the tactile quality of pathways and gathering areas, promoting an organic feel. Additionally, metal accents are used for structural components and decor, offering a contemporary touch while maintaining functional integrity.

Community Engagement and Experience

A key objective of the project is to encourage community engagement. This is achieved through the design of flexible public spaces that accommodate various activities and gatherings. By incorporating diverse water features and vegetation, the project aims to enhance biodiversity, creating an inviting atmosphere for both social interaction and quiet reflection. The layering of experience—from bustling surface areas to serene underground spaces—offers users a unique opportunity to explore the narrative of Milan’s canals.

The "UP and DOWN" project is positioned to serve as a vital connector within the urban fabric of Milan, providing a model for how architecture can effectively blend ecological awareness with public utility.
