05
The building layout facilitates direct interaction with the urban environment, encouraging community engagement.
The "Offices in the Logs" project is a new architectural endeavor located in Tokyo, Japan. This project emerges as a response to the historical context of the Nakagin Capsule Tower that was demolished in 2022. With an expanded footprint of 130m x 80m, the design reflects a modern interpretation of the Metabolism movement, blending modular forms with communal working environments. Positioned strategically within the urban fabric, the project addresses the need for flexible office spaces along with areas that encourage social interaction.

The building concept revolves around a series of modular "logs" that function independently while remaining interconnected. This design choice allows for a diverse range of office configurations and shared spaces, catering to the varied needs of contemporary work environments. Natural light is maximized through a careful approach to fenestration, with a combination of expansive glass panels and smaller windows creating visual continuity both indoors and outdoors.

Modular Design Approach

One of the most distinctive aspects of "Offices in the Logs" is its modular design. Each log functions as an independent unit, enabling flexible usage patterns that range from private offices to shared collaborative areas. This approach facilitates adaptability, allowing the space to evolve with the changing requirements of its users. The stacked configuration creates dynamic visual lines, which not only enhance the building’s aesthetic profile but also optimize the use of available space.

The integration of greenery through outdoor terraces and vertical gardens adds to the project's uniqueness. These elements promote biodiversity and offer natural environments for users, contributing to a healthier workplace. The landscape design serves not only as an aesthetic component but also as an essential aspect of user experience, inviting interaction with the outdoors.

Sustainable Architectural Features

Sustainable practices are a critical part of the design philosophy for "Offices in the Logs." The building employs renewable materials, prominently featuring wood as a primary structural element, which reduces its carbon footprint. Concrete and steel are used selectively to provide necessary support while maintaining the overall sustainability of the project.

Energy-efficient systems are incorporated throughout the design, enhancing the building's performance and reducing operational costs. The integration of natural ventilation and daylighting strategies reflects a commitment to creating a workspace that responds to environmental challenges without compromising user comfort.

To gain a deeper understanding of this project, readers are encouraged to explore the architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural designs that illustrate the innovative features and concepts. The architectural ideas presented in "Offices in the Logs" highlight the future of urban office spaces, emphasizing flexibility, sustainability, and community engagement.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
