5 key facts about this project
“Varti” is located in Riga, within the Rīgas Meža Kapi cemetery. The design is dedicated to memory and reflection, influenced by the story of a knight named Vartis who departed Latvia to defend his homeland. This narrative serves as the foundation for a space that honors the past while encouraging contemplation.
Site Organization
The project includes a columbarium with 544 prefabricated niches, each able to hold one to four urns. The niches are sized at 50x50x50 cm and feature spaces for candles, flowers, and tombstones that bear the names of those remembered. This thoughtful arrangement creates a personal link between visitors and the individuals commemorated in the space.
Design Elements
A defining characteristic of the design is the clear view axis. This guiding line helps to direct visitors as they move through the memorial. Inspired by the knight’s spine, it symbolizes memory and continuity. As people walk along this path, they engage with the narrative of Vartis, making the experience more meaningful.
Functional Considerations
The design incorporates practical features, including a technical room that supports the operation of the columbarium. There is also a ramp to ensure accessibility for all visitors. These functional details demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity, allowing everyone to engage with the memorial comfortably.
Landscaping Features
Surrounding the columbarium, flower meadows enhance the landscape. These meadows symbolize life and serve as a tribute to those who have passed. The placement of red flowers connects visitors to the sacrifices made by ancestors, creating a serene setting for reflection and providing a gentle contrast to the structured columbarium.
