The columbarium located in The Forest Cemetery in Riga is designed to harmonize with its surroundings while functioning as a place for reflection and remembrance. Its aim is to minimize any disruption to the meadow landscape and integrate with the existing layout of the cemetery. The overall concept focuses on creating an environment that respects the historical context and offers a contemporary space for interment.

Configuration and Spatial Layout

The columbarium features a line-shaped configuration that aligns closely with the established pathways of the cemetery. This arrangement allows visitors to navigate the space in a natural way. The design takes into account the historical divisions of the cemetery, ensuring the new structure fits comfortably with its surroundings.

Landscape Integration

Trees are arranged around the columbarium in a regular pattern, creating shaded areas ideal for contemplation. Benches are placed among the trees to encourage quiet reflection. This landscape design enhances the tranquil quality of the site. It also highlights the importance of private spaces for visitors as they remember their loved ones.

Structural and Material Considerations

Central to the design is the memory wall, which is made of cubic limestone elements that create niches for urns. This material choice is practical and aligns with local traditions. The memory wall acts as a focal point, establishing a connection between visitors and their loved ones who have passed away. It is visually prominent in the cemetery, blending practicality with a thoughtful design.

Lighting and Safety Features

The lighting along the memory wall is carefully planned to improve visibility of the inscriptions on the urn niches. This feature enhances the visitor experience, ensuring that names and messages are easy to read. A surveillance system has been incorporated to improve safety, allowing individuals to visit the columbarium with peace of mind, especially during evening hours.

The project concludes with a green roof that restores biologically active areas to the landscape, promoting local wildlife and supporting environmental health. This detail further emphasizes the commitment to creating a space that not only serves as a memorial but also contributes positively to the broader ecology of the cemetery.
