The Berlin Narnia project presents a techno booth intended to enhance the urban setting of Berlin by combining elements of public space with the lively atmosphere of the city’s nightlife. Located in Dead Chicken Alley, an area known for its aisle tenements and courtyards, the design introduces a structure that fits within the existing architectural context while promoting social interactions that are integral to the city’s techno culture. The goal is to create a transition space, allowing people to move from daily routines into an immersive experience associated with non-routine activities typical of clubs.

Conceptual Framework

The core idea behind Berlin Narnia involves redefining public engagement through the design of a transitional space. Inspired by "The Chronicles of Narnia," the techno booth acts as a portal, inviting individuals to step away from the ordinary and into a world filled with distinctive experiences linked to nightlife. This approach addresses the changes in social interaction brought about by the pandemic and aims to reshape how people connect in urban environments.

Contextual Integration

The booth’s design focuses on fitting naturally into the surroundings of Dead Chicken Alley. The façade is crafted to reflect aspects of daily life, helping it blend with surrounding buildings while also standing out as a point of community engagement. This thoughtful integration reinforces the idea that the booth is both practical and an extension of the existing urban landscape, fostering a sense of belonging.

Material Considerations

Materials play an important role in conveying the design’s intent. The project mentions the use of window frames, window glass, and concrete. These materials contribute to both the functional and visual aspects of the booth. Window frames and glass allow people to see inside and outside, encouraging interaction. Concrete, on the other hand, adds stability and a tactile presence, ensuring the booth feels anchored within its environment.

Design Experience

Inside the booth, the layout is designed to create engaging experiences. Thoughtful spatial arrangements encourage social interaction and connections among visitors. This design aims to contrast the familiar urban setting with an atmosphere that promotes unique experiences. As users approach, they encounter changing patterns of light that create a playful environment, drawing them deeper into the world of Berlin Narnia.
