The architectural project "Storytellers" is a pavilion located near Loch Lomond, Scotland, designed to serve as a communal space for storytelling and artistic engagement. This project embodies the integration of architectural form with cultural narratives, creating a setting that invites interaction among visitors. The pavilion's design emphasizes a connection to nature and local traditions, promoting a sense of community while facilitating various forms of expression.

Unique Design Concepts and Materiality

The design of "Storytellers" is characterized by its fluid, organic shape that draws from the vernacular architecture of storytelling spaces. The pavilion’s exterior features reflective surfaces, constructed primarily from glass and steel, optimizing the interaction of light with the surrounding landscape. These materials not only provide structural integrity but also enhance the pavilion's visual dialogue with its environment. The central feature of the pavilion is a fire pit, which serves as a focal point for gatherings, encouraging communal activities and conversation.

The roof employs a lattice structure allowing sunlight to filter through, creating dynamic lighting conditions within the space. This design approach not only improves thermal comfort but also enhances acoustics, supporting spoken storytelling. The pavilion accommodates a variety of art installations and performances, emphasizing versatility and user engagement. Unlike many traditional structures that serve singular purposes, "Storytellers" is adaptable, making it relevant for diverse artistic practices and community events.

Integration with the Environment and Community Function

The project is designed to promote storytelling as a fundamental aspect of cultural identity, reinforcing community ties and inviting participation from a wide audience. Positioned strategically in a picturesque setting, the pavilion's design harmonizes with the natural landscape, minimizing visual disruption while maximizing connection to the surrounding area. The choice of local materials, including sustainably sourced wood and durable concrete, further anchors the pavilion in its geographical context.

The architecture facilitates multiple uses, from informal gatherings to organized events, underscoring its purpose as a cultural hub. The pavilion encourages an exchange of narratives, allowing visitors to engage with both the space and each other in meaningful ways. The emphasis on a communal focal point, combined with flexible spaces, serves to enhance social interaction. This thoughtful architectural strategy sets "Storytellers" apart from conventional public spaces, reinforcing its role as a vital resource for the community.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
