Pinnacles is situated in the striking landscape of Iceland, designed to offer exceptional views of Lake Mývatn, the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, and Hverfjall crater. It functions as a lookout point, featuring three land formations oriented to create different perspectives. The design emphasizes a careful interaction between the structures and the environment, encouraging exploration and appreciation of the surrounding natural beauty.

Orientation and Engagement

The three formations are intentionally positioned to align with key geographic landmarks. This thoughtful arrangement allows visitors to experience the landscape from multiple angles, strengthening their connection to the site. By fostering movement through the space, the design invites visitors to engage actively with the scenery, enhancing their overall experience.

Materiality and Construction

Local materials play a central role in the creation of Pinnacles. The structures are built from locally sourced boulders, rocks, and gravel, reflecting the area's natural geology. Gabion mesh panels function as retaining elements, providing stability while integrating the design with the landscape. This choice of materials highlights a commitment to sustainability and enhances the project's connection to its surroundings.

Minimalism and Functionality

The design adopts a minimalistic stance, focusing on subtlety and practicality. By keeping the design simple, the natural landscape remains the focal point, and the architecture does not overpower what is already there. The shapes of the structures blend with the topography, reinforcing the relationship between the built environment and nature, while functional aspects support the use of the lookout point.

Aesthetic Detail

The form of Pinnacles echoes the undulating contours of the landscape. This natural shape encourages interaction, inviting visitors to touch and walk on the materials. Each formation captures a moment of stillness against the backdrop of Iceland’s vast beauty. This creates a space where reflection and appreciation of the unique environment can take place.
