The Kawakawa Cabin is a meditation space designed to connect with its natural environment. Situated in a peaceful area, the cabin emphasizes a design concept that prioritizes harmony with the landscape. Its hexagonal shape allows users to feel embraced by nature while focusing on their mindfulness practices. The structure promotes transparency and light, creating a calming atmosphere ideal for reflection and relaxation.

Spatial Organization

The interior layout features large windows and skylights, which are positioned to optimize natural light throughout the day. This design choice allows light to cast interesting patterns and shadows, enhancing the connection with the outdoors. The arrangement encourages movement within the space and supports a contemplative experience for users, reinforcing the cabin's purpose as a haven for meditation.

Materiality

Constructed primarily from locally sourced timber, the cabin reflects a strong commitment to sustainability. The use of timber contributes to the structural strength of the building while providing a warm, inviting texture in the interior. The roof is designed with sections inspired by the shape of the Kawakawa leaf, which helps to blend the structure into its natural setting and reinforces the organic feel of the space.

Ventilation and Thermal Performance

The entrance features sliding doors made of evenly spaced timber planks, which promote natural air circulation suitable for the warm climate of the region. This design choice not only supports ventilation but also allows the sounds of nature to flow into the cabin. The walls are fitted with double-glazed windows, improving thermal efficiency by keeping the interior comfortable throughout different seasons.

The cabin sits elevated on concrete pillars, providing a stable foundation that does not disturb the landscape. This design respects the natural topography while ensuring the building is unobtrusive. The glass sections of the roof invite sunlight and rain, offering a direct link to the elements and enhancing the overall sensory experience of the space.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
