The architectural design in Guazhou County, China, offers a small residential space specifically designed for a couple. It is located in Gansu Province, near Dunhuang, a region known for its importance as a transportation link. The design takes into account the unique Yadan landform, integrating the home into its natural surroundings while focusing on both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Design Concept

The main idea behind the design is to create an efficient living space that balances practical use with a compact layout. The small house features distinct areas for living, sleeping, and leisure. This separation allows the occupants to use each space to its fullest potential while ensuring privacy. This approach is essential in a compact home, where making the most of every square meter is crucial.

Sustainable Features

A significant element of the design is the inclusion of an indoor greenhouse. This space not only provides a place for gardening but also promotes a sustainable lifestyle. Cultivating plants indoors enhances the living experience and reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility. The design encourages interaction with nature right within the home.

Material Choice

Ecological wood and prefabricated components are used to support sustainability in construction. The choice of ecological wood emphasizes the importance of using materials that are kind to the environment. Prefabricated elements make the building process more efficient, allowing for quicker assembly and less waste. This focus on materials contributes to a responsible approach to modern living.

Light Management

Adjustable sunshades made from Tyvek are installed on both sides of the house, allowing occupants to control the sunlight entering the living spaces. This feature improves thermal comfort, particularly in warmer climates, and helps reduce the need for artificial lighting. The thoughtful design of these sunshades shows a practical response to environmental conditions and enhances the overall livability of the home.

In the main living area, large windows frame views of the landscape. This connection between inside and outside fosters a sense of openness, highlighting the relationship between the home and its natural surroundings.
