The project aims to create a cabin designed for couples looking for a retreat focused on intimacy and solitude. Located in a quiet, natural setting, the cabin blends with its surroundings, using local flora to promote a sense of privacy and connection to nature. The overall design encourages shared experiences while allowing personal space, making it an ideal getaway for those wanting to escape daily life.

Conceptual Framework

At the center of the cabin's design is the idea of "them and theirs," which highlights the dual nature of relationships. The layout features an open-plan space that includes living, dining, and bathing areas, facilitating smooth movement between different functions. This arrangement encourages interaction and fosters deeper connections between occupants. Key elements, such as the master bed and bath tub, serve as focal points, offering views that immerse residents in the serene environment.

Out-House Design

An important feature of the design is the out-house, which serves multiple purposes, including a rainwater pump-house and additional bathing and sleeping space. This structure enhances the retreat experience by providing flexibility and options for privacy. The inclusion of an outdoor urinal and composting toilet encourages a direct connection with nature, making occupants feel more attuned to their surroundings. The out-house mirrors the primary structure's design, creating a cohesive look while offering a distinct experience.

Material Use and Facade

The cabin’s character is expressed through board and batten cladding, finished in four earthy timber stains. This choice supports the design's connection to the natural environment and creates a varied facade that resembles the vertical lines of surrounding trees. The random spacing of the battens contributes to an organic appearance, while the arrangement of windows ensures privacy while framing selective views.

Sensory Experience

The design includes several features that promote sensory engagement. The main shower functions as both a rain shower and steam room, surrounded by glass to provide uninterrupted views of the landscaped garden. A hinoki bath tub is positioned to offer a relaxing bathing experience with a scenic outlook, reinforcing the cabin's relationship to its environment.

The back patio is home to a variety of fragrant plants that enhance the setting, especially at night when the flowers release their scents. A small BioFuel ethanol fireplace contributes warmth and comfort, allowing for an experience with aromatic resins and oils. These thoughtful details invite occupants to fully experience the nuances of their natural surroundings.
